During the first
practice session for the GP of Monaco at Thursday Jean Alesi
became 15th on the time sheet while teammate Pedro Diniz became
17th.

A short race again for
both Sauber drivers. jean Alesi showed the potential of the C18
when passing car after car and going from 14th position up to 5th.
But then he had to retire due to mechanical problems. Pedro Diniz
had a good race too until he spun off the track.

Again no luck for the
Sauber Team. Jean Alesi put in first gear at the start but when he
accelerated away something broke leaving him without drive in the
start-finish lane. Pedro Diniz' car went well, the handling was
good and he could gain 6th position. But then he gradually lost
the gearbox and the transmission broke completely. So this was not
a good start into the new season.

Both Sauber drivers
had no luck during the qualifying session. Pedro Diniz had to take
the spare car which was setup for Alesi after te engine of his own
car blew up. But nevertheless Diniz beat Alesi with setting the
14th fastest time. Alesi only became 16th on the grid.

The first free practice
session of the new season came and it was at Melbourne/Australia.
There were some troubles for the Sauber drivers when Alesi spun
off the track and Diniz had gearbox problems leaving Alesi on 13th
position on the grid and Diniz on 17th.

During the testing session at Barcelona Jean Alesi
was the surprise of the day: He set the fastest lap on the track at
this day. He was even faster than Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren.
