of the Renault V10 engine. Berger came to an 1:19.664 doing 44
laps. Third of the day was Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren-Mercedes
with 1:21.849.
Mon, 25-Nov-1996
Heinz-Harald Frentzen showed his speed at the Estoril tests when he
was just a hundredth of a second "slower" than Jacques Villeneuve.
Frentzen drove 28 laps with a best time of 1:19.88 while Villeneuve
was just a little bit faster with 1:19:87 during 50 laps. Third of

The Williams Team continued the tests at Imola. There were two
chassis of the FW18 there, one fitted with the new Renault V10 RS9
engine. The new V10 is sitting lower in the chassis. The RS9 is
more powerfull, has more torque and has more than 600 revolutions
per minute more than the old RS8. Jacques Villeneuve topped the
test times of the day with an 1:20.41 doing 41 laps. Heinz-Harald
Frentzen performed well with a second best laptime of 1:20.87. Jean
Alesi (1:21.20) third and Mika Hakkinen (1:21.68) fourth.
Mon, 25-Nov-1996
Today Heinz Harald Frentzen started his second test session with
the Williams Team. He drove the second fastest laptime with 1:20.95
at Estoril/Portugal. He was more than 0.5 seconds faster than ever
before. Only Jacques Villeneuve was 0.2 seconds faster than HHF.
But Villeneuve tested the brandnew Renault V10 engine already.
Frentzen did 43 laps while Villeneuve did 52. Mika Hakkinen
(1:21.54) in the McLaren was third fastest, Eddie Irvine (1:21.70)
in the Ferrari was fourth fastest.
Thu, 24-Oct-1996
Again Heinz-Harald Frentzen drove a best laptime of 1:21.68 during
59 laps at the tests in Estoril. The tests ended today. To resume:
Patrick Head, the technical director at Williams, is very content
with HHF's testing. Although Heinz-Harald has to get used to the
car much more. His best time at Thursday was 1.1 seconds behind the
best test times of Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve this year but
he was exactly as fast as Damon Hill at his last test here. Frank
Williams assured him, that he will have a lot of tests during the
winter. The test was ended at this day because the team was in
schedule.
Wed, 23-Oct-1996
Heinz-Harald Frentzen drove 60 laps in the Williams FW18. His best
laptime was a 1:21.40.
Tue, 22-Oct-1996
Heinz-Harald Frentzen did his
first test
with the Williams Team at Estoril. In his view the car felt a
little bit strange first. But he was very confident to get
acqainted with the car. HHF tried the 2-pedals-set of the Williams
with a clutch button on the steering wheel. In his Sauber he had
the normal three pedals. The test will last until Friday.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen drove a fantastic laptime despite the track
didn't have much grip like at GP weekends. His best laptime was
1:21.68 during 45 laps. His time was faster than Jacques
Villeneuve's fastest race lap of 1:22.873 during the Grand Prix of
Portugal 4 weeks before. Ok, he had a spin today but this time on
the second day in a Williams car is sensationally. Heinz-Harald was
very reserved and said that he first wants to get used to the car.
Thu, 10-Oct-1996
Peter Sauber has left Heinz-Harald Frentzen out of his contract to
do testings for his new team Williams-Renault at 23rd of October.
